Green-schools is an international environmental education programme, environmental management system and award scheme that promotes whole school action towards a sustainable environment. It is known internationally as eco-schools. Thanks to the hard work of teachers and the Green schools student committee, Scoil Ruáin has been awarded four Green Flags to date and is currently working on the fifth flag for Biodiversity.
Scoil Ruain are currently working towards receiving the green flag under the theme of global citizenship: litter and waste. This flag involves revisiting the first theme of litter and waste and also making students aware of the issue globally. The idea of revisiting a theme is to ensure the original changes that were made for the first flag are being maintained. The transition years are currently focusing on fixing any litter problems in the school and the whole school is working together to help maintain cleanliness and emphasize recycling. We have also completed a survey to get an understanding of students knowledge of global issues, we were surprised by the results and hope bring more awareness to the students throughout the year.
